Brazilian Beauty Queen A BRAZILIAN beauty queen whose feet and hands were amputated because of an infection has tragically died, health officials said today.
Officials said in a statement earlier that the condition of 20-year-old Mariana Bridi da Costa deteriorated overnight and that she died at 2.30am.
The Espirito Santo State Health Secretariat said in the statement that the twice Miss World contestant died from complications related to a generalised infection.
It was caused by a bacteria which is known to be resistant to multiple kinds of antibiotics.
The model had been in the hospital in the city of Serra in south-eastern Brazil since January 3.
She fell ill in December and doctors originally diagnosed her with kidney stones, local media said.
But as her condition worsened, she was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection that spread.
It reduced the flow of oxygen to Mariana's limbs, causing her feet to be amputated last week and her hands this week.
Part of the stricken beauty's stomach was also reportedly removed as doctors tried to contain internal bleeding. TheSun
